PROPAGANDA

"One needs the guts to play Krzystof Komeda’s cult Rosemary’s Baby Theme on the table. The Wroclaw-based group Karbido, famous for its cutting-edge projects like the recent album recorded with the Ukrainian poet Yuri Andrukhovich, had the courage to do so — the courage and the skills. THE TABLE has been subtitled as „A MAPLE SWISH-AND-SHUSH“. The show abounds in swishes and shushes, indeed, and the attributive adjective „maple“ will obviously refer to the protagonist of the performance, i.e. the table. A piece of instrument, when properly stuffed, has become a real instrument: the sound that the musicians produce from it takes your breath away. The techniques of their musical performance vary from fondling the table, tapping and patting it, stroking and brushing through shuffling glasses,  whirling coins on its surface and cutting it with razor-sharp blades to plucking the initially hidden strings. The show is an hour-long symphony of sounds, varied   as to their style and atmosphere from hard rock through African drums and club rhythms to vocally embellished Mongolian songs and Eskimo-like rhythmical structures based on human breath. And, hard as it is to imagine, this is how Karbido plays Hendrix’s Hey Joe!"
Joanna Ruszczyk, NEWSWEEK 48/2006

[They Struck the Board And Produced Sounds]
Karbido’s THE TABLE is a world-class musical project, an out-and-out instrumental avant-garde that proves that an unlimited imagination poses no limits to music. Last Thursday the Wroclaw Firley Club was crammed to capacity. Surprisingly, the stars of the evening were not amplifiers, electric guitars or drums, but—an ordinary, rectangular, wooden table. The lights go down. Silhouettes of four exquisite poker players in black suits emerge from the dark and sit around the table. The show begins. It is not a game of poker, though, but a fantastic quartette performed on the table. For two months, in the assistance of luthiers, carpenters and sound designers, the musicians worked on their invention, the astounding transformation of a piece of furniture into a potent musical instrument, in order to finally come out with a table stuffed with ultra-sensitive devices capable of detecting and amplifying the most delicate vibrations and transforming them into sounds that create an electrifying one-hour-long concert, subtitled as “A Maple Swish-And-Shush, Or a Piece For Four Men And a Table”. (…) Karbido demonstrates what freedom in art and music really is. Bravo! Encore!
Grzegorz Cholewa, Gazeta Wyborcza, March 2006

PRESS AFTER SHOW

In The Table, Karbido create an extraordinary musical spectacle with four instrumentalists playing a table using sticks, bows, knives, hands and a mixing desk.
The Times

(...) The Table (Stolik) – created by the Polish group, Karbido – takes us on an electrifying acoustic journey round the globe. This "piece for four men and a table" is really an inspired DIY concert.  Superb.
The Independent

...perhaps now we know what happened to the crew of the Mary Celeste...
The Scotsman

If there was one thing I prayed I wouldn't have to see at this Festival, it was a group banging random objects to make so-called 'music'. Within five minutes of watching this show, I gladly ate my words. This amazing performance had me memorized as they played music from around the world...
Three Weeks

(...)The result is a mesmerising performance, equal parts novelty value, imagination and skill. In other words, the perfect Edinburgh Fringe show.
The List

I promise you will never hear a version of The Stooges' "Now I Wanna Be Your Dog" quite like this one.
